This year’s VHMUN revolved around the topic ‘Climate Change’, an issue of concern world-wide. Capture Your Imagination – A Photography Workshop

Every child is seen clicking photographs these days, opening up avenues of their becoming potential photographers. VIBGYOR conducted a series of ‘Capture Your Imagination’ photography workshops to provide direction to the children, and a chance to express themselves. The first set of workshops were conducted on 17 June 2017 with a session at 10.30 am in VIBGYOR High, Malad, and the second at 2 pm in VIBGYOR High, Goregaon. These workshops were open to all students from grade 6 to grade 12, and there was a remarkable turnout! A total of 51 students from VIBGYOR High, Malad, and 77 students from VIBGYOR High, Goregaon attended these fascinating sessions. The second set of workshops were conducted on 15 July 2017 with a session at 10.00 am in VIBGYOR High, Balewadi, which had 40 participants and the second at 2 pm in VIBGYOR High, Magarpatta where 60 students and parents enthusiastically participated.

Mr. Girish Menon, a renowned photography expert, was the esteemed guest speaker at these workshops. He is also an experienced teacher of photography, having held workshops and classes for over 3000 students earlier, and currently a visiting faculty at University of Mumbai. He started pursuing his passion for the craft since 2003, and has been using cameras to capture various stories and journeys ever since. With long hours of on-field experience, Mr. Menon is well-versed in multiple forms of photography, including people, portrait, street, travel, wildlife, and macro styles.

The main aim of the workshops was to get students to understand various design aspects and technical factors involved in the process of capturing a balanced and professional picture. In order to do so, the workshop started with an introduction to how digital photography works, the types of cameras available, and the different components of a camera. As beginners in photography, children tend to click photographs abruptly with a phone, or get into the frame without any thought about how photography works. This workshop was really helpful in introducing to them, the actual process involved, said a VIBGYOR parent.

The students were taken through the integral steps of clicking a photograph by Mr. Girish Menon, who showed them different captures of the same object with varying camera settings. Through visual examples, and a step-wise explanation of how a camera should be handled, he showed participants the meaning and importance of shutter speed, aperture, and lens focus. The excitement of the students was visible throughout the demonstration, as they noticed remarkable differences caused by simple adjustments to the settings. Apart from the technical components, Mr. Menon also introduced them to the basics of picture composition, from planning out the angle and background of a capture, to the kind of lighting that needs to be involved in each one. Speaking about his experience at the workshop, Mr. Girish said I was glad to know that the students are interested in photography, and extremely enthusiastic about making pictures with their Smartphones. I was very impressed with some of the questions that were asked, the one question that I distinctly remember is, An entry-level camera with a professional lens or a professional camera with an entry-level lens: which would you rather choose?‘ That’s an excellent question. I look forward to seeing the students implement the suggestions that were discussed at the workshop.

The students were also shown a slideshow of photos from multiple genres, taken by various Masters of Photography. This was followed by a session of questions, with the VIBGYORites eagerly putting forward their queries, as well as their interest in learning more about the processes involved! A parent present at the workshop said, It was great that the students had a one-on-one interaction with Mr. Girish. This was a great initiative and the children have learnt several nuances involved in photography. I hope more workshops will be conducted in the future to take this to the next level.

Overall, the workshops were a tremendous success, owing largely to the invaluable contributions of Mr. Girish Menon, as well as the eager participation of the VIBGYOR students.

The 21st Century Student

Kavita Sahay Rapidly changing times, a generation of dynamic youth exposed to a wealth of information, and parents wondering about the legacy their children will inherit.

The future will be drastically different from what it is now and equipping our children with the right survival skills is crucial. The world today is dominated by a few factors that require observation and understanding. Climate change is now an undeniable reality. Technology, with its rate of progress, will eliminate many current applications.

So, what are the pre requisites to be successful in the future? What should the children imbibe to become inheritors of an idyllic world?

Most importantly, emotional intelligence and creativity will go a long way to make our children resilient. Add to that a passion to excel in one’s chosen field. Keeping the ear to the ground, developing an open minded approach, seizing opportunities that come along, also, a willingness to be a lifelong learner.

For young people, thinking of themselves as a work in progress, as continuing on their journey to excellence, is a fantastic attitude to cultivate. It keeps one feeling young and fresh and raring to go.

To be close to nature and aware of issues is also imperative. This sensitivity led a 16 year old girl from Bengaluru to develop an app to monitor water pollution in lakes. She not only won awards and accolades for her work but a minor planet in the Milky Way is going to be named after her.

Let us inspire our children to think positively for the present and the future.
Let us tell them:
Dream and keep dreaming…keep adding to your dreams…let them soar as high as your imagination can take you. Work to achieve your dreams. And then you will be one among the stars.

Teaching Digital Citizenship to your Child

The time is long past where parents could shield their children from the ills of social media or keep them away from gadgets. Now gadgets are a ubiquitous aspect of a child’s life, irrespective of his or her age. It has been well-documented that colleges and recruiters go through a potential candidate’s digital footprint before making decisions. With the growing number of teens using social media, the need to communicate on how to conduct yourself online has become vital. It is important for them to know that what they put out on social media today can cause trouble to them tomorrow.

Online behavioural conduct is referred to as digital citizenship. Digital citizenship is the quality of online behaviour that impacts content. By acting responsibly and respectfully, not only can your child enjoy all the offerings of the internet, he or she can also be protected from cyber bullying.
A few basics to share with your child:

  1. Using appropriate language– Children will use the internet to communicate with not only their friends but also their teachers, relatives and the world as a whole. Thus, using appropriate language is necessary.
  2. Mutual respect– Every person has an opinion and respecting that is vital. In case of a disagreement, be polite. Avoid forcing your point on someone or unnecessary verbal debates.
  3. Plagiarism– It is easy to copy someone else’s work and pass it on as your own. The only rule for plagiarism is to not do it. Give credit where it is due.
  4. Think before you post– It is always a good idea to think about how others might feel on the post you wish to share. Don’t be hasty.

As parents, just like you teach your child values and behaviours that you wish them to emulate, the same holds true when they make their foray into the world of social media. With these basic yet simple guidelines, you can help your child to have a healthy digital presence.

Grooming Students for FUTURE

Kavita Sahay, Director-School Operations and Academics, VIBGYOR High Group of Schools, briefs about the pedagogies and models followed at VIBGYOR to make students future-ready
There is an augmentation in the field of knowledge globally; information is available at the click of a mouse. What students essentially need are key skills to use knowledge and the accelerating technology to face the challenges in a fiercely competitive world. Hence, we need to redefine our approach to teaching-learning and realign existing pedagogies.
We, at VIBGYOR High, view knowledge as a whole and encourage students to integrate their learning of different disciplines and develop the essential skills of the 21st century. Corresponding to this belief, our educational philosophy is based on the holistic principles of learning where the emphasis is on the overall development of the child: intellectually, socially, physically, emotionally and spiritually. The pedagogy of ‘Integrated Learning’ is the core of our educational programme. Based on the Gestalt principles of learning, it brings together diverse disciplines in order to help students establish connections between subjects and perceive knowledge as a whole. Our curriculum is designed to incorporate three dominant models of integrated learning.
Our activities are based on multiple disciplinary learning where the unit under study is analysed from the perspective of different disciplines. For instance, while studying RK Narayan’s ‘Malgudi Days’ as a part of literature, students are also taught the history of freedom struggle, investigate the background against which the book is written, cartography and caricature styles of the illustrator RK Laxman.
Another model of learning that cuts across curricular domains is interdisciplinary learning that emphasises on certain crucial abilities and vital skills that are transferable across disciplines. Learning activities include group activities that foster skills such as Collaboration and Collective Intelligence; and independent learning activities that promote Self Direction and Initiative. Inquiry –based learning and technology-led research promotes key STEM skills such as problem solving, analytical thinking and the ability to work independently.
We also provide students with transdisciplinary learning opportunities such as VIBGYOR High Model United Nations, Student Teacher Exchange Programme (STEP) and Europe Meets India (EUMIND). These activities not only help them in applying their knowledge and skills in a real life context but also ingrain in them cross-cultural sensitivity, broader worldview and social responsibility. The students connect with their counterparts from different countries and undertake collaborative study on globally significant themes.
Our schools are a mini replica of this world, where students are groomed to be productive future global citizens.
