Tips To Handle Stress Among Children

With changes in lifestyles and the environment, peer and parental pressure, as well as societal expectations, stress has become a major cause of concern among children from a young age. With every year that passes by, there are changes in the system, advancements in technology, and a lot more that’s expected from children each day which might be overwhelming for them.

As a parent, here’s what you can do to ensure your child is better equipped to deal with stress.

1. Let your child know you are approachable

Every child needs an adult who can understand what they are going through, and can guide them to make better decisions. However, children may not speak out about their problems without a lot of prompting or encouragement. Ask your children about their day, and prompt them to open up by pointing out aspects of their behaviour that indicate their mood with statements such as “You seem to be a little down in the dumps today. Did something happen?”

Let your child know you are approachable

2. Give importance to play

Physical activity stimulates the body and mind, and also helps in the production of endorphins, which are hormones that lift up one’s mood. By encouraging your children to engage in at least half an hour of play can help them deal with stress in a significantly better manner

Give importance to play

3. Space out their schedules

With the level of importance given to grades, competitions, and academic performance, children end up doing a lot more within a day than is healthy for them. The average student goes to school for eight hours, is expected to be completely attentive and at peak performance in class, has tuitions in the evenings, extra-curricular classes, and homework to complete before going to bed. Make sure your child has enough time to rejuvenate each day without having to think of the things they are expected to do.

Space out their schedules

4. Allow mistakes

Kids tend to feel pressurised because of the consequences they would face if they are not living up to expectations. Letting your children know that mistakes are inevitable, and that they won’t face punishment for doing something incorrectly goes a long way in reducing the amount of stress they feel.

Allow mistakes

5. Teach your child how to think calmly and critically

A lot of stress that children feel is due to their feeling of helplessness, or not knowing how to get out of a difficult situation. Teach your children how to think objectively, and help them figure out steps to deal with a stressful circumstance. Getting them acquainted with techniques such as mindfulness and meditation would also help them get in touch with their feelings, and deal with stress in a calmer, more rational manner.

Teach your child how to think calmly and critically

Children just need to know that their parents are on their side, and will support them through any difficulty. Set aside some quality time to spend with your child each day, and equip them with the mindset and confidence required to handle any challenges that life throws at them.

Ever since its advent in 2004 under the able leadership of Mr. Rustom Kerawalla, VIBGYOR Group of Schools has been working towards providing quality education to students all across the country through its integrated learning system. On 6 July 2017, VIBGYOR was awarded the “Innovation in Learning” Award for Excellence in Best in Class Learning & Development at the World HRD Congress. The award was received by Vice Chairperson, Ms. Kavita Sahay, who represented VIBGYOR at this prestigious event held at Taj Land’s End, Mumbai.

VIBGYOR’s innovative learning approach goes beyond merely the academic curriculum at each of the schools. Students are encouraged to participate in various extra-curricular activities, as well as events which complement their classroom learning, in order to inculcate a level of enthusiasm in them. With teachers providing individual attention to every student, the children are exposed to a motivating environment, where they explore their own strengths and weaknesses. In this manner, students are able to understand their own potential, and are empowered to tackle various challenges in their own creative, individual manner.

Apart from being highly qualified trainers, the teachers also play the role of mentors to the children, tackling issues which extend from classroom learning difficulties to various general aspects as well. In this manner, they ensure that every child is provided with an environment that makes them feel comfortable and open to self-expression.

VIBGYOR Group of Schools looks at the holistic development of each of its students as its main objective. In order to facilitate the same, the schools have state-of-the art lab equipment, computers for students to work on, high-end sports gear, performing arts initiatives, and multiple national and international events held periodically to provide exposure to the students. Students are also taught the importance of valuing cultural differences and adapting to changes in the world. From being special-needs friendly to inculcating societal values in the children, VIBGYOR’s focus has remained on ensuring that every student gains the qualities required to be a global citizen, and natural leader.

We are proud to announce that these steps taken by VIBGYOR Group of Schools to provide innovative and reliable educational institutions have resulted in the achievement of yet another milestone. A big thanks to all who have supported us through this journey.

Capture Your Imagination – A Photography Workshop

Every child is seen clicking photographs these days, opening up avenues of their becoming potential photographers. VIBGYOR conducted a series of ‘Capture Your Imagination’ photography workshops to provide direction to the children, and a chance to express themselves. The first set of workshops were conducted on 17 June 2017 with a session at 10.30 am in VIBGYOR High, Malad, and the second at 2 pm in VIBGYOR High, Goregaon. These workshops were open to all students from grade 6 to grade 12, and there was a remarkable turnout! A total of 51 students from VIBGYOR High, Malad, and 77 students from VIBGYOR High, Goregaon attended these fascinating sessions. The second set of workshops were conducted on 15 July 2017 with a session at 10.00 am in VIBGYOR High, Balewadi, which had 40 participants and the second at 2 pm in VIBGYOR High, Magarpatta where 60 students and parents enthusiastically participated.

Mr. Girish Menon, a renowned photography expert, was the esteemed guest speaker at these workshops. He is also an experienced teacher of photography, having held workshops and classes for over 3000 students earlier, and currently a visiting faculty at University of Mumbai. He started pursuing his passion for the craft since 2003, and has been using cameras to capture various stories and journeys ever since. With long hours of on-field experience, Mr. Menon is well-versed in multiple forms of photography, including people, portrait, street, travel, wildlife, and macro styles.

The main aim of the workshops was to get students to understand various design aspects and technical factors involved in the process of capturing a balanced and professional picture. In order to do so, the workshop started with an introduction to how digital photography works, the types of cameras available, and the different components of a camera. As beginners in photography, children tend to click photographs abruptly with a phone, or get into the frame without any thought about how photography works. This workshop was really helpful in introducing to them, the actual process involved, said a VIBGYOR parent.

The students were taken through the integral steps of clicking a photograph by Mr. Girish Menon, who showed them different captures of the same object with varying camera settings. Through visual examples, and a step-wise explanation of how a camera should be handled, he showed participants the meaning and importance of shutter speed, aperture, and lens focus. The excitement of the students was visible throughout the demonstration, as they noticed remarkable differences caused by simple adjustments to the settings. Apart from the technical components, Mr. Menon also introduced them to the basics of picture composition, from planning out the angle and background of a capture, to the kind of lighting that needs to be involved in each one. Speaking about his experience at the workshop, Mr. Girish said I was glad to know that the students are interested in photography, and extremely enthusiastic about making pictures with their Smartphones. I was very impressed with some of the questions that were asked, the one question that I distinctly remember is, An entry-level camera with a professional lens or a professional camera with an entry-level lens: which would you rather choose?‘ That’s an excellent question. I look forward to seeing the students implement the suggestions that were discussed at the workshop.

The students were also shown a slideshow of photos from multiple genres, taken by various Masters of Photography. This was followed by a session of questions, with the VIBGYORites eagerly putting forward their queries, as well as their interest in learning more about the processes involved! A parent present at the workshop said, It was great that the students had a one-on-one interaction with Mr. Girish. This was a great initiative and the children have learnt several nuances involved in photography. I hope more workshops will be conducted in the future to take this to the next level.

Overall, the workshops were a tremendous success, owing largely to the invaluable contributions of Mr. Girish Menon, as well as the eager participation of the VIBGYOR students.
