TEACHER TRAINING MODULE STUDENT MOTIVATION
A workshop on Student Motivation was conducted for all ICSE teachers on Wednesday,18 April, 2012
The teachers were guided on various extrinsic techniques that could be used in classroom situations to encourage a student to excel in classroom situations as well as life.
It was inspiring to hear from the teachers the techniques they had already applied in class to persuade and guide pupils to achieve success or get over their inhibitions. The role play conducted by the four groups was not only entertaining but an eye opener as well.
The workshop highlighted the vital role played by a teacher in influencing, motivating, guiding and encouraging the pupils under his/her care, not only in academics but also ensuring their emotional and social development.
HMUN Training Programme
The HMUN training programme was held for the VIBGYOR High delegation on 3/4 January. Mr Ramit Malhotra, a representative from the World View Education Services Private Ltd and muncafe.com, conducted the programme. He gave an insight into MUN procedures that need to be followed during HMUN 2012. The students were trained on the code of conduct, the making of position papers and the making and passing of resolutions during the conference. He also gave them tips for winning the prizes. The event was a fantastic learning experience for our student delegates.
EXTENDED QUESTIONING STRATEGIES
The workshop on ‘Extended Questioning Strategies’ was conducted on 7 January for the teachers of the Primary and Secondary sections. The main objective of the workshop was to make the teachers aware of the power of questioning to enhance learning and motivate the learner. They realized, how effective questioning, leads to successful learning. Involving the teachers in activities made the workshop lively and reinforced the importance of the various strategies. A written activity that is to be submitted in a fortnight will enable the teachers to recall the strategies and use them in class.
Checkpoint Results 2010 – 2011
It gives us great pleasure to announce the spectacular results of the Checkpoint Exams 2010 – 2011. The students have worked very hard and the results mirror their wonderful efforts.
Master Devansh Saluja has stood first by scoring an average of 6 (English – 6, Maths – 6, Science – 6).
Miss Ojasee Datar has come in second by scoring an average of 5.9 (English – 5.7, Maths – 6, Science – 6).
Miss Poonam Parekh achieves the third position with an average score of 5.8 (English – 5.4, Maths – 6, Science – 6).

ICSE
FIELD TRIP TO NEHRU PLANETARIUM
The students of Grade 5 ICSE were taken to the Nehru Planetarium on 22 November, as an extension to their Social Studies unit ‘Motions of the Earth’. The documentary film on the life of the famous Indian astronaut Kalpana Chawla, inspired them. Our aspiring space explorers were also taken to the Sky Theatre which was a visual treat. They went home with their mind juggling the mysteries of outer space.
CHEFS IN THE MAKING
Four of our students – Mervyn D’souza, Parvati Nambisan, Ashish Sangai and Slade Gomes – from the ICSE, participated in a Salad Making Competition, ‘Little Chefs (Nature’s Palate)’ conducted by Queen Mary’s School, Grant Road. The creativity and culinary skills of our students were far ahead of all the other participants. Our team returned victorious, having won the trophy. Congratulations to our budding little chefs!
Exploring New Avenues
A workshop on Environment Education, ‘Multiply the Message’ was conducted on 15 and 16 November by Trailblazers, supported by Dow Chemical International Pvt. Ltd., at Karjat. Two of our teachers, Ms. Sunila Amanna (ICSE) and Ms. Nita Morjaria (IGCSE) attended it. They explored how environmental education could be integrated with other subjects. They also got an opportunity to interact with other teachers and exchange ideas. It was an enriching and a constructive experience.

BOWELD OVER
As an extension to the Social Science unit ‘Celebrations – World Wide Sporting Festivals’, the students of CIPP 1 enjoyed a spot of cricket on the bright and sunny morning of 22 November. Despite the hot and humid weather, the young cricketers were eager to display their skill on the playground. The players displayed true sporting spirit and it seems unlikely that the students will ever forget this sporting event.
CULMINATING ACTIVITY
On 22 November, our Grade 1 students were given an opportunity to showcase their talent through a marvellous skit, a spectacular fashion show, some brain teasers and an informative power point presentation. Wall and table displays of projects and models added to the ambience and left the parents amazed at the inherent talents of their kids.

BEING SOCIALLY AWARE
An educational trip to Kashid, was organized from 17-20 October, for the students of Grade 10 ICSE, as a part of the SUPW curriculum. The visit to the SOS Children’s Village overwhelmed them. They entertained the residents with a spectacular programme and donated stationery items. A tour of a nearby village and its two room primary school acquainted them with the problems faced by rural folk. The entertainment show on the last day brought many unknown, latent talents to the fore. The trip was enriching and educative.
THE MANY SPLENDOURS OF INDIA
Our students visited various places on an educational trip from 15 – 20 October. At Jaipur, they visited the Amer Fort, Jantar Mantar, and the Hawa Mahal, enjoyed a sumptuous dinner at ‘Chowkhi Dani’ alongwith rides on camels and elephants. The next stop was the Ranthambore National Park where they were taken on a safari. At Agra, they were wonderstruck by the beauty of the Taj Mahal. A visit to the magnificent Fatehpur Sikri left them enthralled. They had fun shopping at Jaipur and at Karol Baug in Delhi. A fast paced, fun packed roundtrip indeed!
GO GOA
On 15 October, the students of the secondary section set off on a trip to Goa. In the span of six days they visited several interesting places within Goa. The charming churches, the breathtaking beaches, the shopping sprees, a visit to the spice plantation, a cruise on the Arabian Sea and the fabulous Goan cuisine, enchanted all. These sun-drenched days and crisp evenings created a collage of memories for all our students, who were disappointed to return, on 20 October, after this fun-filled, educational trip.

VISIT TO NEHRU SCIENCE CENTRE
The students of Grade 3 visited the Nehru Science Centre on 5 October to enhance their knowledge about Early Man and the Human Body. Huge working models helped them observe how different organs of the body function and how the brain controls all body movements. There were some interactive quiz portals which the children operated. They were excited when they came up with the right answers. They returned with a clear understanding of how the internal organs work.
INTER HOUSE STORY WRITING COMPETITION
The imagination, creativity and innovation of the students of Grades 1 and 2 were translated into beautiful stories for the Inter House Story Writing Competition held on 10 October. The budding writers rose to the challenge superbly and came up with truly awe-inspiring stories. It was very difficult to judge their stupendous works of creativity.
A STARRY NIGHT
As an extension to the topic ‘Sky, Weather and Seasons’, the students of Grade 1 were given hands on experience, to explore the sky at night, on 7 October, through a star gazing activity. A power point presentation gave them information on the different planets and their features. A treasure hunt was arranged for them and our little ones proved to be smart hunters. They also made gorgeous crowns using cut outs of the sun, the moon and the stars.
BEACH CLEAN UP
The members of the Nature Club and the students of Grade X ICSE went for a Beach Clean Up Activity at Juhu Beach on 7 October, a day after Dusshera. There was a lot of non-biodegradable waste strewn on the beach, which was cleared by the Airen Vibgyorians and the Grade X SUPW participants. The students enthusiastically set to work, moving large idols and other kinds of waste. The entire activity was arranged by the WWF. The common love for preserving Nature in its pristine form fostered a spirit of team work and friendship among the students.
INTER HOUSE CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION
The Inter House Creative Writing Competition was held on 11 October for the students of Grades 5 to 9. The topics set the creative juices flowing and the students came out with some original masterpieces. It was a difficult task to decide on the winning entries.
KANHERI CAVES
The students of Grade 9 ICSE were taken to Kanheri Caves, at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, on 13 October. The Chaityas, Stupas and carvings belonging to the Mahayana sect of Buddhism left the students enthralled. The details of the monks’ lives and the water harvesting technique practised by them was explained to the students. Not only did they learn some amazing historical facts but also had a lot of fun.
CULMINATING ACTIVITY
Matilda, by Roald Dahl, made an interesting read for the students of Grade 4 ICSE. A few memorable scenes, knit into an exciting skit, brought characters to life, when performed during the Culminating Event. ‘Classroom Olympics’ at the end of the show was greatly enjoyed by the parents. This Culminating Event paid fitting tribute to the great author.
VISIT TO THE "MET" DEPARTMENT
The field trip for Grade 8 ICSE to the Meteorological Department on 13 October was an extension of the Geography Unit ‘Weather and Climate’. All the instruments, used to forecast, weather were shown to the students. How these instruments worked was explained to them with the help of charts. It was an enriching experience as they saw the practical use of these instruments.
CULMINATING ACTIVITY
A picturesque representation of the myriad activities that were done in the First Term by the students of Grades 5 to 7 ICSE, was displayed on 5 October. The culminating project display was a peek into the ingenious work of the students in the different subjects. The ‘Activity Corner’ enthralled the parents by involving them in different intellectual activities. The parents were amazed to see the amount of work their children had done during the term.

INTER HOUSE CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION
The gamut of competitions ensures the development of a variety of skills in our students. In the Inter House Creative Writing Competition, held on 11 October, the students of CIPP 1 spilled out their creativity in the form of a picture book. While students of CIPP 2 were given five characters around whom to build an original story, the students CIPP 3 modified a popular story, giving it a ‘twist in the tail’ .The students of CIPP 4 had to spin a yarn from the given beginning. All of them were extremely successful in capturing their imagination on paper.
VINTAGE CARS
The students of CIPP 5 went on a field trip to Swadi Automobiles, Worli, on 11 October, as an extension to the topic ‘Century of the Car’. They were exposed to different cars manufactured through the years. Mr. Swadi, an 87 year old gentleman, who ran the establishment, warmly welcomed and guided the students. They not only gained a wealth of practical knowledge but were also treated to sumptuous snacks and take away gifts.
FAREWELL,CLASS OF 2011
The IGCSE and A Level Batch of 2011 were bid adieu on 7 October with a Red Carpet welcome. The Awards Show appreciated the exceptional effort of the students through the year. The hosts put up scintillating performances for their seniors while the ‘Guess Who?’ game was uproarious. The VIBGYOR Stars were declared towards the end of the evening. The movie on the time spent in school brought back nostalgic memories of good times spent with friends. The evening culminated with a delicious dinner and some simply superb dance moves.
WORKSHOP ON TIME MANAGEMENT
A workshop on ‘Time Management’ for CIPP teachers was conducted on 1 October. The key objectives emphasized, were prioritizing responsibilities and balancing professional and personal commitments. The interactive session was an informative one which helped teachers learn how to manage ‘themselves’ rather than trying to ‘manage time’.
A TOY STORY
As part of the Social Science Unit on ‘Toys’, the students of CIPP 1 went on a field trip to the toy section, at Hyper City, on 5 October . They were amazed to see the different toys and games on display. The shop attendants informed the students about the origin of different toys, the different materials used in making the toys and the age group they are meant for. It was truly a visit to toy land for the little ones.
CHAMPIONS!
Our basketball team comprising U-16 (Girls) & U-14 (Boys & Girls) again created history by winning the Inter school ICSE Basket Ball Tournament conducted by the Association of ICSE Schools in Maharashtra (AISM) on 4 October 2011 in Thane. Rushab D’souza of grade X has been selected to represent Maharashtra state for the National Level ICSE Basketball Tournament to be held from 11 to 15 October in Kerala.
ARCHAEOLOGY
As an entry point to the topic ‘Archaeology’, the students of CIPP 4 had an exhilarating treasure hunt on 19 September. Each of the two groups was given multiple clues to find the hidden treasure and on reaching it, a challenging activity to be performed. The excitement was palpable and the fun increased manifold as each clue was cracked. The students successfully unscrambled the puzzling clues, leaving them richer, not only with the treasure they found but also with the knowledge they had acquired.
A THEATRICAL EXTRAVAGANZA
On 23 September, CIPP had their Inter House Performing Arts Competition. The entire CIPP was transformed into a theatrical fiesta, with the students of Grade 1 dressed as nursery rhyme characters like Ba-ba-black-sheep, Jack and Jill, Old Mac Donald and so on. Our Grade 2 came alive with fairy tale characters prancing around and casting a spell on everyone. The students of Grade 3 looked vibrant, dressed as wildlife creatures, each articulating his/her unique attributes. Grade 4 made us revisit history as their classroom reverberated with the speeches of famous historical characters.
STUDYING THE ENVIRONMENT
On 30 September, the different facets of the environment were exhibited through miniature models by the students of CIPP 2. As a home activity, they had to make their chosen environment in 2D or 3D form. Their creativity came to the fore as they made their projects using waste materials. They even used real leaves, twigs, sand and mud which gave a wonderful effect to their work. The students spoke about their projects confidently and answered the questions posed by the enthralled viewers with panache. A truly good way to make concepts clear.
EXPLORERS AND ADVENTURERS
As an entry point to the Social Science topic ‘Explorers and Adventurers’, the students of CIPP 3, explored the world on 27 September. They shared their knowledge and experiences regarding the safety equipment, clothes and food needed during explorations. The seven groups prepared to tackle the various challenges faced while exploring various areas, ranging from snowy mountains to dry deserts, from volatile volcanoes to dense jungles, from the soothing water bodies to the unknown underground and the mysterious space. Our diverse surroundings sparked off excitement as all of them were eager to embark on a journey of exploration.
INSTRUCTIONAL LEARNING
As an extension to the English unit ‘Quest’ the students of CIPP 3 were delighted to have an instructional activity. They had a whale of a time making delicious ‘Bhel Puri’ on 28 September. The students brought all the ingredients required to make the ‘Bhel Puri’ and followed the instructions given to prepare it. It was indeed a ‘scrumptious’ learning experience.
WORKSHOP ON TIME MANAGEMENT
The teachers of the ICSE and NIOS attended a workshop on ‘Time Management’ as a part of the Teacher Training Module of VIBGYOR High. They were given tips on how to plan and organize their schedule in an orderly manner, allowing them to have a stress free work atmosphere by meeting deadlines with ease and fulfilling their commitments on time. To encourage them to work towards an eco-friendly environment at work, some tips on paper management were discussed. Participation and suggestions from teachers were also encouraged during the workshop making it an interactive and a fruitful session.
INTER HOUSE FAIRY TALE CHARACTERS
Our Grade 2 students had the opportunity to display their talent and creativity in an Inter House Competition of Fairy Tale Characters. The preliminary round was conducted in each division giving an opportunity to all the students to showcase their talent. The students who excelled from each division moved on to the final round. VIBGYOR High came to life with witches, wizards, dwarfs and fairies on 19 September during the Final Round. The wonderful performances put up by the participants were an evidence of the great potential that our students have.
ACHIEVEMENT REPORT OF BASKETBALL
Our Basketball teams have made us proud once again. They created history by winning almost all the titles. U-14 girls’ teams won the D.S.O. Basketball Divisional Tournament held at Father Agnels Vashi on 28th & 29th September 2011. They are selected for the State level basketball tournament.
HISTORY MAKERS
The Basket Ball teams of Vibgyor High, Goregaon (w) Mumbai, (U-17 & U-14 Boys, & U-14 Girls) created a history by winning all the three tournaments they participated in at the D.S.O. Basketball Tournament held at Hansraj School, Andheri (W), Mumbai. The All Mumbai inter-school Basketball tournament was held from 15 to 17 September 2011.

DNA YA! JUNIOR JOURNO FELICIATION
On 16 September, a felicitation ceremony was held at the Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi to honour all the children selected as the DNA Ya! Junior Journos for the year 2011. Tamanna Kapila of Grade 9 IGCSE was one of 70 students chosen from more than 3000 students of schools from all over Mumbai. Each Journo was given her/his press and kit by Mr Sinha,the editor of DNA. Ms Lubaina Bandukwala, the editor of DNA Ya! promised that the JJs would have an enriching learning experience attending 6 interesting workshops with experts and interacting with the DNA Ya! staff while working on their assignments.
OUR LITTLE LAUREATE
Saloni Ladha from Grade 4 ICSE represented our school in the Inter School Hindi story telling competition conducted by YMCA on the 3rd September 2011 and secured first place. She proved her language versatility by delighting both the audience and the judges under the able guidance of our Hindi department and faculty. Kudos to Saloni..!! You have made us proud . Congratulations to you..!!
CIPP
A VISIT TO SANJAY GANDHI NATIONAL PARK As an extension to the unit, ‘Our Environment’ the students of CIPP 2 and CIPP 5 got an opportunity to visit the Sanjay Gandhi National Park on 26 August. This trip enhanced the knowledge and understanding of the students on various plants and insects in their natural environment. It was an interactive session headed by an experienced and professional wildlife expert. The students were amazed to see the architectural structure of termite hills and wondered if men could ever create something as splendid. Our students had a bank of knowledge by the end of the trip.
 
JOB HUNTING The students of CIPP 2 went on a field trip to Axis Bank on 23 August as an extension to the unit ‘Jobs’. At the bank they were shown the reception area, the cash and cheque deposit counters, the vault and the business centre. In an interactive session the Branch Manager enlightened the students on the working of the bank and the different services offered by it. The children returned armed not only with chocolates but also a huge deposit of knowledge.
COLOURS OF INDIA 30 August was a fun filled day for the students of CIPP 1 during ’Mela Masti’ which reflected the ancient festivities of India. The students provided a glimpse of a fair held in days gone by in rural India. It threw light on various Indian customs and traditions. A variety of games provided both entertainment and information. A truly colourful day.
AROUND THE WORLD This is the generation on the go. The boundaries are shrinking and opportunities abound to explore the magnificence of the world we live in. Our students of CIPP 1 went on a field trip on 24 August to a travel agency - Star Tours - as a part of their unit ‘Holidays’. The excited students were shown beautiful pictures of different places around the world on a large screen. An interactive session was conducted by one of the tour officers about how the travel agents help people to plan and travel around the world.  
THE RAINFOREST CAFE On 24 August the students of CIPP 4 had an opportunity to show their solidarity to the cause of saving “THE RAINFORESTS” and thereby saving our home – ‘The Earth’. They made a splendid attempt to elucidate to the Café visitors about Rainforests - their importance, location, animals, plants, tribes, products, music and ornaments with the help of illustrative charts. The message ‘Save the Rainforests’ was vividly brought out through a skit. It was indeed an enjoyable learning experience.  
CIE ORIENTATION On 20 August, an orientation was conducted for the Grade 10 IGCSE parents and students to familiarize them with the CIE - A Level Qualification. The parents were informed about the subjects and combinations offered by VIBGYOR High and the introduction of the Humanities stream this year. The parents were made aware of the facilities extended to the students, the personalised guidance and mentoring given to them. The exposure to experiential learning and the numerous events our students have attended in the past were also showcased. The orientation concluded with an interactive discussion in which the parents’ queries were resolved. .

HMUN-INDIAN CHAPTER The very first India Chapter of the Harvard Model United Nations was held in the World Trade Centre from 17 to 21 August. The opening ceremony was held in the Sophia Bhabha Hall. Twenty-four students from Grades 8, 9 and the AS Level attended it. More than 800 delegates from 20 different countries participated in the 10 different committees indulging in intelligent debating, passing resolutions and interacting with their counterparts. This very enlightening HMUN ended on a high with the closing ceremony held at the KC College.
 
VIBGYOR HIGH GREADER'S CLUB A new movement, ‘A Greed to Read’, has been set in motion! The VIBGYOR High Greader’s Club (VHGC) was inaugurated on 20 August in the School Library. The response to this venture was overwhelming. The 60 members were welcomed by the senior students with some inspiring speeches. Bookmark mementoes were presented to the Principal, the Guest of Honour Ms Priyanka Chaturvedi and all the members. A Quick Quiz gave a glimpse to the members of the wonderful journey ahead. This was followed by the activity ‘Pitch for Your Favourite Book’. We hope to have more members joining us soon.
 
ONLINE DEBATE Six students of the AS Level participated in the Online Elimination Test of the ‘BCL Debating Matters’ Inter School Debate on 26 August. The topic was, ‘The Media is Justified in Invading the Privacy of Public Personalities’. After a thorough research the students came well equipped with their points, argued against the proposition and provided their opinion to five questions. They have now been selected to participate in the Regional Finals to be held on 27 September in Mumbai.
POWER OF VALUES A workshop on ’Power of Values’ was conducted for the Secondary teachers on 30 August. An interactive session created awareness on the importance of values in our lives as well as the core values of VIBGYOR High. Follow up tasks ensured that there would be effective application of the knowledge gained. The participants thus found the key to happiness which lay in inculcating the right values in students to make them progressive thinkers who can face the challenges of this world.

DEBATE DRAMA Students of AS Level participated in a Class Debate on 29 July. They spoke with poise and élan on the topic ‘Is the Youth of Today Lazy?’ The class was divided into 2 teams to voice their opinions. The proposition maintained that today’s youth is too dependent on gadgets and gizmos and those from affluent homes expect the household help to do all their chores. The opposition argued that many teenagers are actually running their own businesses with turnovers that go into millions. The speakers spoke enthusiastically; with some even providing glimpses into their own lives to prove their points.
 
INTER HOUSE COMPETITIONS The Inter House Competitions for the middle school was held on 9 August. Grade 5 students participated in a Speech Competition based on the theme ‘Great Indian Achievers’. They spoke with conviction and confidence on many great personalities highlighting their immense contribution to our beloved nation. Our Grade 6 students worked as a team to create a display depicting the cultural heritage of India. The students of Grade 7 performed Indian folk dances. The energy, grace, dignity and skill with which the dancers executed every move were greatly appreciated by the audience. Our young Indians truly made us proud.
 
CELESTIAL WONDERS Grade 7 ICSE were taken on a field trip to Nehru Planetarium on 10 August as an extension to their Geography Unit ‘Motions of the Earth’. An introductory session was conducted by the educational guide, who enlightened them with information about ‘The Position of the Celestial Bodies’ followed by a documentary on ‘Kalpana Chawla.’ They were shown an educational film titled ‘Stars and Wonders of the Universe’ at the sky theatre.It was an informative and enriching experience.
A FREE MARKET ECONOMY, AN IDEAL ECONOMY The students of A Level participated in a Class Debate on 5 August. They spoke with fervour and confidence on ‘A Free Market Economy, An Ideal Economy’. They were divided into two groups to voice their opinions. The proposition and opposition were thorough with their research and vehemently supported their teams’ point of view. The judges were amazed by the debating skills of the students. It was an unforgettable experience.
CULMINATING ACTIVITY On 9 August Grade 4 had a culminating activity based on the theme of diverse natural regions of India and its varied flora and fauna. The students presented a short skit with panache and zeal. Their flair for drama held the audience enthralled. The various projects on display were inspiring and riveting.
MOVIE TIME To sensitize our students to realistic social issues, the students of Grade 5 were taken for the movie ‘i Am KALAM’ on 10 August. The motivational movie was based on the story of Chhotu, who had a dream of getting educated in a school and become a 'big' man when he grew up. The students enjoyed the movie, especially the climax which had endearing moments. The movie evoked feelings of compassion and empathy in every heart.
INTER HOUSE COMPETITION Justifiable pride and patriotism manifested itself during the Inter House Singing Competition for Grade 4 on 10 August. It was evident that each and every participant had put in tremendous effort to ensure that they perfected the song. The melodious array of meaningful songs enthralled the audience and the judges. The students created a mood of national pride and inspired feelings of patriotism in one and all.
 
INDEPENDENCE DAY On 15 August VIBGYOR High, Goregaon (West) celebrated Independence Day. The Flag Hoisting Ceremony followed by the rendering of the National Anthem strengthened the spirit of patriotism in everyone present. The colourful dances which followed the Principal’s speech kept the audience mesmerized. The winners of the Grade 5 Elocution competition once again presented their speeches to the audience inspiring them with the sublime thoughts of our great freedom fighters. The high point of the programme was the felicitation of the IGCSE 2010-11 toppers.
ACTIVITIES From 21st to 30th July ICSE
TASK MANAGEMENT The workshop on Task Management and Classroom Management was conducted on 30 July for teachers. It emphasised the process of managing a task through planning, testing, tracking and reporting. Varied strategies for effective task management were shared by the group. The three main components of good classroom management were discussed and linked to the VIBGYOR Curriculum. It was extremely beneficial to our teachers and equipped them with effective tools to manage the class and complete their tasks efficiently.
Nature Trail As an extension of the Biology curriculum the students of Grade 8 ICSE were taken to the botanical garden of the Mumbai Port Trust, Colaba on 29 July. On the nature trail they identified a variety of plants, insects, mushrooms, snails and butterflies in their natural habitat. It gave them hands on information of the topic and helped to make concepts clear. They enjoyed it thoroughly.
Understanding Adolescence On 30 July Counsellors from the Resource Department conducted a workshop –Understanding Adolescence- for students of Grade 6 and 7. The objective of the workshop was to impart necessary life skills to cope and resolve issues pertaining to puberty. Changes during adolescence were discussed in-depth encompassing the physical, psychological and social domains. The workshop stressed on maintaining necessary hygiene for healthy development. Issues like sexual abuse were handled sensitively. Students were empowered with the information on ways to prevent it. They clarified their doubts and shared personal experiences. It was an eye-opener for many.
Visit to Parle Biscuit Factory As an extension to their Business Studies unit, the students of the A Level were taken on a trip to the Parle Biscuit Factory on 21July. The specific aims were to analyse if the location of the factory is suitable for business, to understand the method of production and the technology used, the relationship between employee and employer and to know the recruitment and selection procedure. During the question answer session, the students were curious about the quality assurance procedure and the facilities and training given to the employees. It was a wonderful learning experience
Culminating Activity (The Universe’ and ‘The Earth) The first Culminating Activity of Grade 3, held on 26 July, was based on the Social Science unit ‘Our World and Beyond’. The students presented their understanding of the concepts of ‘The Universe’ and ‘The Earth’ with panache. The parents were happy to see them exhibit their new found knowledge. It was an enjoyable experience for the parents and students.
Nature is the Art of God As an extension to their Science unit ‘Structure and Functions of Plant Parts’, the students of Grade 5 (ICSE) were taken on a trip to Mahim Nature Park on 28 July. An introduction session was followed by a visit to the art gallery where they were drawn into the mysterious world of the flora and fauna found there. Later, on the nature trail, they identified the various types of plants and animals in their natural habitat. In all it was an enlightening and enjoyable experience.
NIOS
Field Trip to Hypercity The students of NIOS Level 1 and 2 visited Hypercity, Malad (West). The trip was an extension to the Economics topic Goods and Services and Departmental Stores in Business Studies. Mr. Abhijeet, the sales manager in Hypercity, explained to the children about the in-house brands and also about the sales promotion schemes that are put in by various big brands for increasing their sales. Overall it was a learning experience which did not limit itself to the topic being dealt with but also provided more useful information to the students of Business Studies and Economics.
Chaat Party The NIOS Level 1 had a ‘Chaat Party’ for all the students of Level 1 and 2 on 22 July. It was a study of food and its preservatives, as a part of their Home Science unit - Food and Nutrition. The students enthusiastically participated and prepared and served various Indian ‘Chaats’. It gave them hands on experience on the use of preservatives and information on the nutritional value of different items used to make ‘chaat’.
CIPP
Nature’s Paradise The students of CIPP 3 and 4 visited the Mahim Nature Park on 26 July, as an extension to their Science units ‘Plants’ and ‘Rain Forests and Habitats’. They were awestruck when they learnt that the pristine park is the habitat of over twenty thousand species of butterflies and many insects and plants. A presentation followed by a nature walk helped them identify the various insects and plants. They came back with a better understanding of nature and their responsibility towards Mother Earth.
Hindi Hain Hum Hindi is one language which binds our diverse cultures and traditions and keeps alive the very spirit of India. The Inter House Competition held on 22 July celebrated the various hues of our rich national language – HINDI. The students of CIPP 1 and 2 recited poems eloquently while the students of CIPP3 and 4 narrated wonderful stories and the students of CIPP 5 wrote stories based on a picture. These activities ensured that the children cherish and understand the finer nuances of a vibrant language - HINDI.
Instructions – A Way of Life To follow and deliver instructions to the ‘T’, definitely helps to declutter not only our surroundings but also our minds. We have thus incorporated this real life skill in our Routes To Writing Programme for CIPP 1 and 2. Two very interesting activities were done on 21 July. CIPP 1 followed instructions to make yummy dominoes. CIPP 2 followed instructions to make delicious jam sandwiches. They savoured the mouth watering dishes and proudly shared the recipes with others.
Learning about Small Scale Industries On 20 July, the students of Grade 9 and 10 IGCSE went on a field trip to Yusuf Meherally Centre. The tour guide gave the students a brief history of the centre. They saw the small scale industries like the oil refinery where sesame oil and mustard oil is refined and packaged, the pottery section, where clay models by the local artisans are displayed and the soap making process. At the vermiculture unit the students learnt about the importance of garbage and the role of the worms in the making of compost.

Bonding with Nature The students of Grade 4 ICSE went on a field trip to Kalina University on 28 June as an extension to their Social Science unit – Soils, Crops and Plant Adaptation. They observed and learnt the names of different trees, medicinal plants, shrubs and spices. A sapling was planted by them to support and strengthen the ‘Go Green’ campaign. It was a truly exciting experience for them.

Field Trip to Inorbit Mall The students of Grade 7 and 8 IG who have opted for French had been to Inorbit mall on 18 Dec to explore the supermarket. They were shown the delicious French cheeses and other dairy products and were also taken to the boulangerie (the bakery) where they saw the various French breads. They visited the wine section to learn about the red and white wine from France and were shown the various fruits and vegetables. The students participated enthusiastically and were constantly asking for the French names. On their return to school they wrote an essay on their experiences.
MANOR MEMOIRS The students of CIPP 3 and Grade 3 ICSE had a rollicking time on 17 July in Manor. After clambering up commando nets and sliding into kiddie pools, they had a sumptuous lunch. A treasure hunt, archery, rifle shooting and camp songs kept them enthralled through the evening. A scrumptious dinner followed before they reluctantly retired for the day. The following day, they woke up, eager for a trek along the river and up the hill. After breakfast and prize distribution it was time to leave.So packed in all their memories of Manor to share with their parents

The Hindi Story Telling Competition was held on 15 July Grades 3 and 4 ICSE. The students narrated a variety of stories including folk tales, incidents from the epics and stories with moral values. The final round was held on 16 July. The winners of the competition in Grade 3were

CORRUPTION – No More!
Grade 10(IGCSE) Assembly, held on 14th July began with the school prayer, followed by the vision and mission of the school and a skit, which gave a powerful message to fight corruption and bring about a change within us. An inspiring thought for the day underlined how unacceptable demands of children need not be fulfilled. VIBGYOR High News brought everyone up to date on the recent events like VHMUN and Student Council’s Elections. Achievers in the fields of sports and cultural activities were given certificates and prizes. The Principal also stressed on the need to fight corruption in today’s times.
Hindi
Inter-House Competition on ‘Hindi Language Skills’ was held on 18 July. Grades 5, 6 and 7 wrote picture compositions, stories and essays respectively for the competition. They were enthusiastically involved in writing their masterpieces exhibiting good language skills, and striving to write the best possible composition using rich vocabulary. Judging the competition was a difficult task as the stories written by students were extremely interesting and portrayed their creative writing skills.
Bully Me Not!
To highlight the serious issue of child abuse, a counselling session was held for the students of Grade 3 ICSE by the Resource Team on 29 June, as an extension to their literature unit of ‘James and The Giant Peach’. They were taken through an audio-visual presentation that explained what child abuse is. This also covered topics like bullying and the emotional trauma experienced by the victim. This helped sensitize them to child abuse and its repercussions.
CIPP
Bastille Day July 14 is celebrated as the National Day of France. I is also called ‘Bastille Day’. On this special day the students of CIPP 3, 4 and 5, were shown pictures and videos of the Parade at the Champs de Elysees , Paris, the display of musical firecrackers and the entire history of Bastille Day. Grade 3 prepared flags of France as souvenirs. Grade 4 made an exotic display on monuments of Paris and Grade 5 its culture. This little celebration gave an understanding to all the grades about the French revolution and also the culture of the French people.
Wings to My Aspirations The entry point to the unit ‘Jobs – The Grown –Up World’ for CIPP1 was on 19 July, 2011. This was to create awareness of the various avenues open to them in future, and a realization that they have to juggle home and work and strike a balance between responsibility and fun. The students dressed up as various professionals and spoke about each job with poise and confidence. Their efforts were appreciated and applauded by all present.
Sense and Sensibility For their unit ‘Senses’ the students of CIPP 2 went on a field trip to The Happy Home School for the Blind on 20 July. They were amazed that despite their handicap these young children went about exercising, studying and eating just like they do. They developed immense respect for these special children. Thereafter they went to ‘The Nehru Science Centre’- to get a hands on experience into the ‘The World of Our Senses’. Time was short but the students returned energized by this unique learning experience.
Creating Smiles Along the Miles The students of CIPP 1 went on a pretended holiday to London on 19 July. They were all excited and dressed in their holiday best. The classroom was modified into an airport with a check in counter, security check, waiting area, coffee and souvenir shops. A few students dressed up as pilots, flight attendants and air hostess executed their duties very well. The passengers were all eager and looked forward to a wonderful journey. They were attended and greeted with a warm smile by pretty airhostess and handsome stewards. It was a wonderful and informative experience for the students.
Glitterati (Young beauties on the Ramp) As an extension to the English Voyage unit “Caleb’s Clobber” the students of CIPP 3 had a fashion show on 13 July .The main objective of the fashion show was that all the students would be able to identify different kinds of attire and outrageous items of clothing and associate it with splendid adjectives. After walking the ramp they had to give an adjective to describe their attire. It was entertainment with a purpose as after the activity the students were able to identify appropriate adjectives. Indeed an unforgettable experience for these young ones!
Mime Competition As an extension to their English lesson on Communications Grade 7 IGCSE performed short mime plays in class. They were inspired by Marcel Marceau, the great mime artist. The skits were conceptualised and performed by the students with zeal and enthusiasm and they impressed the teachers with their inspiring performances. The competition was judged by two teachers of the English department. The students were particularly thrilled by the presence of our Principal, Mr. Shim Mathew who appreciated the students’ efforts. He encouraged them to put into practice what they were learning through many more such invigorating activities.

The year 2011 -12 started with a bang with the achievements after Basketball team now our Gymnastic team bring glory to the school. Our Vibgyor students had participated in gymnastic Level Competition Organized by Andheri Taluka Gymnastic Association at Prabhodhan Thakare Krida Sankul,Vile Parle (E)on 23rd July 2011. Total 5 schools and 6 clubs register for competition.
The result is as mentioned – 5 Gold, 4 Silver, and 2 Bronze.

Vision Beyond Sight
Field trips involve active learning through fun-filled experiences in a new and different environment. The second graders were taken to a blind home for their first field trip on 27 June. The slogan ‘VISION BEYOND SIGHT’ was witnessed there when our little ones saw them operating the computer, spinning, weaving clothes and making beautiful craft articles. It was a revelation for some who had never come across such incredible works of art by visually impaired people. The students realised that they are capable of living an independent, productive life and are not trapped by their disability.
Inter House Competition
The Inter House Craft Competition for Grades 5 to 7, for the academic year, was conducted on 29 June 2011. The students of Grade 5 had to make a Treasure Box; Grade 6 a Paper Bag and Grade 7 Garbage Bins. Children participated enthusiastically. They created colorful and vibrant craft articles using waste materials innovatively. Their zeal to finish making the treasure boxes, paper bags and garbage bins within the allotted time was particularly charming. A few children came up with wonderful ideas. The materials used like straws, newspapers, ice cream sticks, foil, etc were ordinary but the effect was extra-ordinary.
VIBGYOR High Model United Nations
The inaugural VHMUNC was held at Goregaon (West) from 30 June to 2 July. It was attended by more than 120 students from the VIBGYOR High Group of Schools. The guest delegates from SIS and Ecole Mondiale made valuable contributions. After the opening ceremony the representatives from Harvard MUN, India, gave some excellent suggestions to the delegates. The committee sessions were abuzz with members working on resolutions ranging from International Terrorism to Sustainable Debt Management. The Press Release ‘La Voce’ was a refreshing take on the exciting happenings at the conference. The event was a fantastic learning experience.

Peek-a-Boo into the Future
As an entry point to the unit ‘Ourselves’ the children of CIPP 1 had an exciting day on 14 June. Dressed as different professionals, the classroom was buzzing with confident future teachers, doctors, engineers, sportsmen, scientists and artists. They donned the perfect attire and brought along required props. The children participated with much zeal and shared relevant information about their future profession, thus enlightening their classmates about the myriad career options awaiting them.
Snooze Time
“Wow! A sleepover at school!” The children of CIPP 2 were overjoyed on 17 June, as their fun quotient reached a new high. A sleepover activity was arranged as a part of their Routes To Writing Programme – ‘My Best Ever Sleepover’. They merrily changed into their pajamas and snuggled up on the mats with their favourite toys and friends. To wrap up the activity an interesting story was read out to them on being healthy. Later, the kids dozed off to sleep cuddling their toys.
Senses at Work
Students of CIPP 2 were made to connect to the world around them by getting ‘a sense of the Senses’ on 8 June. Different sense booths with challenging games and activities had the children thoroughly enjoying themselves. To understand the importance of the sight, they were blindfolded and had to pin the tail to a donkey. Their sense of touch was accentuated when they had to feel the different things in the ‘feely box’. A variety of concentrates stimulated their taste buds. Differentiating aromas and matching sounds enhanced their sense of smell and sound.It was a wonderful learning experience.
IGCSE
Bridging the Gap
On 22 June, students of Grade 7 IGCSE made 3D models of famous bridges for their term project based on their English Language unit ‘Crossing Rivers’. Different materials such as clay, paper and straw were used. The students participated with enthusiasm. A spirit of healthy competition reigned in the class as they vied with each other to create the most innovative designs. They also had to submit a brief write up about the history, structure, geographical position and importance of their chosen bridge. It was a fulfilling experience indeed.

Best out of Waste
The Inter House Competition of making pen holders out of waste materials for Grade 2 ICSE was held on 22 June. It was a pleasure to see the tiny creative minds bubbling with joy and excitement. Coming in different shapes and sizes, the kids astounding work of art was full of vibrant colors, glitter, mirrors and ample variety of materials which was a refreshing addition to the classroom. Each one made beautiful and attractive pen holders out of waste. The 3 best creations were given a souvenir.
Weighty Matters
Our students of Grade 1 ICSE were offered a platform to showcase their creativity by organising an Inter House Competition of making paper weights. This was held on 21 June for which they were asked to get waste materials from home and create as much beauty out of it as possible. The students with the best three creations were declared winners. It was marvellous to see skilful work done by our little ones!
A TRIP TO THE POST OFFICE
Grade 1ICSE students went on a field trip to the Post Office on 22 June and saw how the mail is collected, sorted and sent to its destination. Our little ones were shown the different stamps used, and how parcels were made. They posted ‘Thank You’ letters to their parents. The experience showed the students how letters touch each of our lives almost every day. They understood how mail binds the community together and connects local citizens with the nation and the world.

Coffee Meet & Teacher's Induction
Vibgyor High organised the orientation program for parents to get them well acquainted with the infrastructure and to maintain a transparency regarding the policies and curriculum accustomed by the school.
The coffee meet for grade 1 and grade 2 was held on 4th June, 2011 in the SPA block of the school. The teachers welcomed the parents, followed by greetings from the principal and the co-ordinator.
A brief slideshow was presented to depict the teachings and methodologies that were practised in the preceding years.
ACTIVITIES held from 31st March - 9 April
Culminating Activity
The Culminating Activity for Grade 1 was conducted on 4th April, 2011 with the amalgamation of their Social Science and English Literature units. The array of events comprised of an enchanting skit, a dazzling fashion show, an informative display and a knowledgeable PowerPoint presentation on kinds of houses. Glimpses of the ‘Reader’s Theatre’ were shown to the parents. The activity was summated with a brainstorming game for the parents. The children emulated the characters of the reader ‘Nate the Great’ with great poise and confidence. It was indeed a spectacular performance by the children and was also well appreciated by the parents.
Chocolate Delight
As an extension to their Literature unit ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ the students of Grade 3 made chocolates on 1st April, 2011. In a fun-filled environment, the students learnt to make chocolates using various ingredients. They wrapped the chocolates beautifully. These chocolates will be sold by the Grade 3 students to their parents on their Culminating Day for a noble cause. It was an exhilarating experience full of fun and learning.
Culminating Activity
The students of Grade 4 (ICSE) celebrated their last Culminating Activity of the year on 5th April, 2011. The activity was based on their Literature unit: ‘Malgudi School Days’, Social Science units: ‘Work’, ‘Force’, ‘Energy’, ‘Sound and Simple Machines’ and the Hindi story entitled ‘Dhaaridar Baagh Ka Naach’. The parents had an enriching experience watching the students perform various experiments in the work stations. A quiz session was conducted for the parents to test their intellect. It was a fun-filled day both for the students and parents.
Culminating Activity
As an extension of their Social Science and Literature units, the students of Grade 2 presented their Culminating Activity through a wonderful skit on 7th April, 2011. It was a fun–filled experience as the students performed their parts. The ambience was wonderful and the beautiful moments captivated the minds of all present. The students explained the content knowledge of all the concepts that were taught to them in the class. It was an indelible and a pleasant experience for all involved.
Donation To IDF
After the completion of the novel 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' a chocolate making activity was conducted for the students of Grade 3 ICSE.They made chocolates to be sold to their parents on the Culminating Day, the proceeds of which were to be donated for a noble cause. On 8th April, 2011 the proceeds were donated to the Indian Development Foundation (IDF)- an institution that works for underprivileged children. Our young Vibgyorites proved that charity begins at home.
Culminating Event
Grade 3 ICSE celebrated their last Culminating Activity on 7th April, 2011 on ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘My Nation, My Pride.’ After the enactment of the novel the students displayed their understanding of the diverse cultures of India through a variety of dances. They were taken on a gallery walk and viewed the projects on display. The highlight of the event was the chocolate sale. The parents were enthralled by the performances, the talents and the skill of their kids.
Mumbai Darshan
On 31st March, 2011 an exciting trip was conducted around Mumbai for the students of Grade 3 CIPP. During the ‘Mumbai Darshan’, the students visited important landmarks of the city. The journey began from the Gateway of India followed by the B.M.C. building, the Rajabai Tower, Raj Bhavan, The Times of India building, Hanging Gardens and various other locations. The students gained an understanding and insight into their city in terms of it’s geographical location, origin of it’s name and the original inhabitants of the city. The trip left an ineffaceable impression on their minds.
Mesmeric Rendezvous
On 7th April, 2011 Grades 1 to 5 (CIPP) had their Culminating Activity. The children revisited some of the concepts taught over the year to give their parents an insight into it. The Display Rooms for Math and Science brought out the scientific temperament in the parents. The theatrics of our creative children in Science and English left them awestruck. The excitement was palpable in the Grade 1 and 2 Puzzle Room where the parents went on a puzzle cracking spree. The entire experience mesmerized the parents who were elated at the glorious achievement of our young, bright stars.

Field Trip to a Garden
As an extension to their Social Science unit, the students of Grade 2 were taken to a garden. It was an enriching experience as the students thoroughly enjoyed the trip and in the process, learnt the art of mapping. Students also traced the route from their school to the garden. They came up with some beautifully sketched maps which actually redefined the concept of maps taught to them in the class. It was like a recreational trip for the children as they got to spend quality time with their peer group.
Field Trip To Nehru Science Centre
As a part of their Social Science unit ‘Energy and Force’, the Grade 4 children visited Nehru Science Centre on 22nd March, 2011. They visited the galleries of ‘Light and Sight’, ‘Sound and Hearing’, ‘Illusion’, ‘Virtual Reality’, and explored how image is formed in the eye and how sound reaches the brain. The students also visited the fascinating ‘Evolution of Man’ and ‘Human Body’ galleries. They entered the model of the heart and had a closer view of the various chambers in it. The children were captivated with these images and had an enjoyable learning experience.
Overnight Trip to Silvassa
As an extension to their Social Science unit ‘Importance of Forests’, an educational trip to Silvassa was organized for the students of Grade 3 ICSE and CIPP on 11th and 12th March, 2011. The children visited a Tribal Museum where they got an opportunity to see an amazing collection of masks, musical apparatus, fishing gadgets and life size statues. The children were fascinated by their visits to the Botanical Garden, the Lion Safari and the Deer Park and also had fun during the Treasure Hunt activity. The entire experience was indeed fun filled and the students returned with fond memories.
Overnight Trip to Pune
As an extension to their Literature unit ‘Malgudi Schooldays’ and their Social Science unit ‘Wild Animals in the Indian Subcontinent’, an educational trip to Pune for Grade 4 ICSE and CIPP students was organized on 13th and 14th March, 2011. The children visited a local village named ‘Save Our Souls’. Students were touched by the plight of the street children who resided in that village. The children were fascinated by their visit to the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and the Snake Park. They returned with fond memories that they will cherish forever.
Conflict Management
‘Conflict is inevitable, but combat is optional’. This was brought into focus at the Workshop on Conflict Management which was conducted for Primary teachers on 19th March, 2011. The main objective of the workshop was to understand ways to deal with conflicts at our workplace and work amicably as a team towards personal and organizational goals. The information of different types of conflict and the ways to resolve it was covered with a PowerPoint presentation, questionnaire and role play. It was an enriching experience for the teachers, where they learnt the importance of STAR: STOP, THINK, ANALYSE and RESPOND.
Star Gazing Camp
As an Entry Point to their Social Science topic ‘Day and Night’, the students of CIPP– 2 spent an evening out under the stars on 17th March, 2011. Mr. Prabhu Velar from the Nehru Planetarium enlightened them about stars and planets. They had a hands on experience of peeping through the telescope and spotting the moon and were surprised to see the size of the craters on the moon. The young ones were in high spirits and were overjoyed to spot a cluster of stars in the dark sky. They returned with the message that we must conserve energy and protect our environment.
Chocolate World
The academic year of Grade 6 IGCSE ended with a Culminating Activity on the delectable ‘Chocolate World’ on 21st March, 2011. The students covered a gamut of text types by writing narrative, descriptive, instructional writing, book reviews and dialogues– all based on chocolates and put them up on the class soft board. PowerPoint presentations were also shown. This was a good revision of all the text types they had learnt throughout the year. As an extension to this unique way of revising, they brought chocolates, biscuits, muffins and milkshakes to treat the entire IGCSE section. A ‘Choco Pick’ game was also played.
All About Insurance
On 18th March, 2011 the students of NIOS Board Level 1 went on a field trip to HDFC Life to get a practical understanding of the topic– ‘Insurance’. Our students got an opportunity to understand the various types of Insurance Policies existing in the market. Mr. Jacob, the ‘Training Manager’ in HDFC Life explained the different types of insurance plans to the students. The students’ queries were patiently answered and they found the session to be very informative. They were offered snacks and a token gift (mugs) before returning to school.

Learning “Conflict Managment”
An effective workshop on ‘Conflict Management,’ was conducted by the Secondary Co-ordinators on 5th March, 2011. The workshop was very informative, highlighting the meaning of Conflict, its advantages and disadvantages, types and causes, and steps involved in resolving them. The teachers had an enjoyable learning experience wherein they actively participated in various activities, debate, analyzing case studies, solving a questionnaire for identifying their style of Conflict Management, role play, etc. VIBGYOR is proud of its constant endeavour to enhance teacher effectiveness by conducting such regular in-house training workshops for teachers.
 
Exploring the Past
The Entry Point for Grade 5 CIPP was organized on 3rd March, 2011. The students expertly delved into the past through role plays and presentations on the various mythological characters and events in the ancient Greek, Roman, Chinese, and Indus Valley civilizations. The gradual evolution of our society adopting and adapting different practices from different civilizations thus, paving the path for the modern era was depicted beautifully through this activity.
Mumbai– The Melting Pot of Cultures
On 7th March, 2011 the students of Grade 3 CIPP had an Entry Point to the topic ‘My City– Mumbai.’ The main purpose of this activity was to make the children aware of Mumbai as the heart of India and how people from diverse cultures, communities, and languages reside together making it a cosmopolitan city. Each child spoke about what they had dressed up as, how they celebrate their festivals and the popular food items they had brought. Music from different cultures was played. It was truly a splendid experience for the children.
Visit to an Eye Clinic
As an extension to their Science topic ‘How we see things,’ the students of Grade 5 CIPP were taken on a Field Trip to ‘Panorama Eye Clinic’ on 7th March, 2011. The doctor presented a brief session on the model of an Eye. She informed them about the various common eye defects and also showed a video clipping of a Cataract Operation in process. The doctor obliged the fascinated children with appropriate answers to their queries. It was truly an informative experience for them!

Storyboarding
As a part of their English lesson, a very interesting Group Story Telling session took place in Grade 6 IGCSE on 4th March, 2011. The students had been given Storyboarding group work a week earlier on the following stories: ‘The Mysterious Traveller’, ‘James and the Giant Peach’, ‘Nemo’, and ‘Matilda’. Each group had selected a story from this list. The students prepared and presented colourful and attractive charts in which their selected story was depicted by means of drawings, paintings and sketches.
Field Trip to Cloth Factory
To make the children aware of the different kinds of clothes and fabrics, the students of Grade 1 were taken to a nearby cloth factory on 4th March, 2011. The children gained knowledge about the various stages involved in the production of fabrics like cotton, silk, rayon and nylon. They were briefed about the natural and man-made fabrics. Children were shown the samples of different types of fabrics and were explained the process of manufacturing the garments. It was an interesting and informative experience.
Culminating Activity
As an extension to the Hindi unit ‘Ek Dost Saanp’ and Social Science theme ‘India’ a Culminating Activity was conducted by the students of Grade 3 on 4th March, 2011. The Hindi enactment based on the virtue of friendship and its importance in life was integrated with the Social Science topic. The students exhibited their understanding about different physical features and the flora and fauna of India in an enticing manner. The students benefited a lot as they moved on from recognition to exploration of the various concepts and ideas taught in the class.
Grade 9 takes on Social Responsibility
SUPW is an integral part of the ICSE curriculum that contributes to the holistic development of students. A visit to an old age home, Assisi Bhavan, on 4 March, 2011 helped to sensitize our children towards a better understanding of the plight of our senior citizens. The students organised a dance and music programme for them and also voluntarily donated utility items. The surprisingly energetic nonagenarians danced and sang and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The children came away feeling happy and a little more inclined to take on such fruitful social responsibilities.
Pot Pourri of Ideas
On 28th January, 2011 Inter House Competitions were organized for Grades 1 to 4. Grade 1 articulated their understanding of ‘Creepy Crawlies’ on charts as the tiny group members negotiated with each other in perfect tandem. The Grade 2 children showcased harmony as they worked in teams to present the ‘Five Senses’ through models, charts and verbal presentations. The ‘Human Body and Systems’ were depicted beautifully by Grade 3, where the team members collaborated effectively like the different organs of the human body. Grade 4 projects were scrapbooks based on adaption of plants and animals due to differences in climate or landscape.

Workshop On Stress Management
A workshop on Stress Management was conducted on 19th February, 2011. The main objective of this module was to understand the concept of stress, its effects and how to overcome stress in our lives as well as that of others. The workshop started with an interesting activity which gave an opportunity to the teachers to identify where they feel stress in their bodies. There was a PowerPoint presentation on effects of stress, techniques for overcoming stress, causes of stress in students and its remedies. The workshop proved to be a great stress buster.
Save Our Earth
A Culminating Activity was organized on 22nd February for students of Grade 2 to emphasize the importance of saving the planet Earth. This activity not only provided the students the opportunity to develop and showcase their creative skills but also created awareness about pollution and its ill–effects. The students presented their thoughts through a thrilling skit that presented a wonderful understanding of the topic and encouraged the students to do their bit in conserving Nature. Parents also enthusiastically participated in the “Go Green’’ activity. It was an enriching experience for all involved.
Class Debate
As an extension to their English lessons on Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice’, a class debate was organized by the students of Grade 7 (IGCSE) on 21st February, 2011 on the topic ‘Is Shylock a VICTIM or a VILLAIN?’ The students displayed their knowledge and understanding of the topic by confidently arguing their points of view. Both the teams impressed the audience with their eagerness, enthusiasm and energy. They were particularly excited by the presence of many of the IGCSE teachers and the Principal, Mr. Shim Mathew, who appreciated their efforts and encouraged them to participate in many such events.

ACTIVITIES held from 14th - 18th February, 2011
Assembly – Grade 7
The students of Grade 7(IGCSE) conducted the Assembly on 17th February, 2011 on the theme ‘Live the Green Dream.’ After the prayers and the inspiring Thought for the Day, the News headlines were read out. The highlight of the programme was a skit depicting the bleak future of India. The skit, ‘The Big Blue Bubble,’ gave a message for all to save the country from destruction. The students were honoured with awards and certificates. The Coordinator addressed the students and emphasized on the need for discipline in the Institution. The program ended with a rendition of the National Anthem.
Field Trip To Sanjay Gandhi National Park
A field trip to Sanjay Gandhi National Park was conducted for Grade 7 and Grade 8 (ICSE) on 17th and 9th February, 2011 respectively. Grade 8 visited the park as a part of their Geography unit ‘Vegetation of India.’ The field trip for Grade 7 was as an extension to their Geography unit ‘Natural Vegetation.’ The students went trekking along a trail in the park. They were mesmerized by the history that went behind the common trees. The Guides explained the importance of forests and their conservation. It was an informative and enlightening experience for all.
A Culminating Event
A Culminating Activity for Grade 4 was held on 18th February, 2011. This activity was based on their Social Science unit “States of Matter.” The children put up a drama related to Air and Water. After the enactment the students shared their knowledge about various properties of air and water by performing experiments. Parents were deeply touched with the PowerPoint presentation- ‘Water 2070’ and sincerely pledged to save water along with their family members. The great efforts of the students and the teachers were extremely appreciated by the parents thus making the whole event a splendid success.
Stop Vehicular Pollution
An exciting Culminating Activity was held for the students of Grade 1 on 17th February, 2011 on the topic ‘Transport and Communication.’ The children spread awareness on Vehicular Pollution through an enthralling street play. Our young Quiz Masters tested the knowledge of the parents with some interesting questions. They shared information on the topic of Communication through a PowerPoint presentation and enthusiastically explained the displayed charts to the parents. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
A Visit to the Traffic Park
The children of CIPP– 1 were taken on a field trip to the “Traffic Park” on 15th February, 2011 where they were shown posters regarding all aspects of road safety. They went through the road signs displayed on a huge board and enthusiastically answered questions asked by the policemen. The children were then taken on a walking drill around the park and instructed on using Zebra Crossings and following traffic signals and road signs. They were excited to be given the opportunity to ride a bicycle on the grounds and went home happily with a ‘Bicycle Safety’ certificate.
Field Trip
On 15th February, 2011 Grade 6 (IGCSE) students were taken to the Inorbit Mall, Malad. This was an extension to the various topics studied in English, Geography and Physics. Students studied the location of the Mall, its area and also surveyed the parking lot. Then they spent a very fruitful hour at the Crosswords bookstore. They visited many shops and collected leaflets from there. Later, they attended an orientation in the Imagine store about the latest technology by Apple Industries and played many games on the IPads and laptops.
ILMUNC 2011
12 students of VIBGYOR High, Mumbai attended the ILMUNC 2011 organised by University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA from 27th to 31st January, 2011. The MUN delegation was accompanied by two MUN Advisors including the Principal Mr. Shim Mathew. The students were assigned 10 different committees of UNO and two topics each were given for discussion. Later, they visited the Washington DC, New York and Harvard and MIT University at Boston. It was an informative and enriching experience for all. They imbibed a lot from this trip.

A Field Trip – Veermata Jijabai Udyan Zoo
The trip to the Zoo, organized on 7th February, 2011 for the children of Grade 6 (ICSE) was related to their Science unit ‘Study of Animals’. The students were enthralled to see various animals, a variety of birds and certain rare trees like the Baobab. They were informed about endangered animals and the importance of protecting them. The trip was not only enriching but also brought about awareness among the children on animal life.

Collage Activity
An Inter-house Competition was held on 19th January, 2011 based on the topic ‘My Family.’ Students created a collage in class highlighting the role and importance of a family and its members. Some children created amazing family tree using pictures, drawings and photographs in the collage. The first round of the competition was held in individual classes from which two were short listed for the final round. The creativity and talent of the children was evident from their work.

Inter House Competition
‘Unity in Diversity’ was rightly symbolized in the inter–house competition conducted on 20th January, 2011 for Grade 2 on the topic “My Beautiful Country.” The collages were a perfect fusion of old and new, urban and rural, religious and technological aspects of India. The splendour of India was depicted in the collage activity through pictures of different festivals, monuments and traditions. The activity showcased the spirit of patriotism and talent of students. Overall an enriching experience for all involved.

Visit to a Bank
The students of Grade 1 visited the Axis Bank, Goregaon on 20th January, 2011 for an experience outside their everyday class activities. Here they were briefed about the working and the different departments of the bank. The importance of the locker was also communicated to the children. This trip proved to be extremely productive as the children were introduced to the process of withdrawing money from the ATM machine. The trip to the bank was truly a learning experience for the curious minds.

Republic Day at VIBGYOR High
The spirit of patriotism in the Vibgyorites was further strengthened on 26th January, 2011- our Republic Day. The day began with the hoisting of the National Flag. Students from different grades came together to showcase their multifaceted talent on the theme of the day ‘Kaleidoscope of Talent- One India’. The sports achievers were also felicitated for their laudable performances in the interschool competitions. It was indeed a great occasion for everyone present there. The sense of oneness and unity and celebrating the joy of being an Indian seemed to fill the air.

A Field Trip to Nehru Science Centre
On 19th January, 2011 students of CIPP- 3 and 4 were taken on a field trip to Nehru Science Centre to experience and enjoy the basic principles and marvels of Science and Technology. This was as an extension to their V-concepts topic Inventions and Machines for Grade-4 and Explore Science topic Magnets and Springs for Grade-3. The students visited various galleries which were full of exciting, interactive and interesting exhibits. This trip was fulfilling in many ways. It not only enhanced their knowledge but also developed their thinking skills.

Pride In Our Hearts
The competition held on 24th January, 2011 was focussed on the Republic Day– to celebrate and cherish the sovereignty of our vast and diverse democracy. The topic for Grade 1 was ‘My Family.’ Grade 2 made collages on ‘My Beautiful Country’ showcasing the vivid and vibrant life of India, thus encapsulating the physical set-up, culture, religions, traditions, flora and fauna, and growth of the country over the years. Grade 3 made marvellous displays and presentation on ‘National Symbols’ and Grade 4 made collages on ‘Saving Animals.’ Their thought-provoking captions created awareness about endangered species.

Young Energy Savers
The students of Grade 8 IGCSE went for a field trip to the ‘Reliance Infrastructure Management Institute’ on 13th January, 2011. There Mr. Narendra Jadav, an IIT M.Tech instructed the students about the generation and distribution of energy. He explained all the terms related to electricity and cleared the concepts of Energy Generation and Distribution. He also elucidated on Energy Conservation and motivated the students to be a part of the Young Energy Savers. He discussed a few of the initiatives which students can practice in order to save energy. It was an enriching experience indeed.

Model United Nations
On 17th January, 2011 Grade 6 IGCSE students took part in a Model United Nations (MUN) session based on the topic – ‘Child Labour’. Students were divided into groups of three. Each group was given the task of researching on various nations. Students came prepared for their speeches having done exhaustive research on the definition of Child Labour, rules and regulations in each country regarding this issue, laws framed by the governments against it, actions taken by the governments and law enforcement agencies and the role of NGO’s. It was a very interesting and an eye opening session.

Visit to the Radio Station
The students of Grade 1 were taken to a Radio Station to reinforce their theoretical knowledge on Means of Communication. They visited the 92.7 FM (BIG FM) studio on 13th January, 2011. The importance of curbing vehicular pollution along with the causes and effects was discussed with the Radio Jockey. It was indeed a lively interaction and it proved to be very informative and efficacious. It was an enriching and fulfilling experience for the children to witness the working of the broadcasting system.

Workshop on Interpersonal Communication Skills - Primary
A workshop on Interpersonal Communication Skills was conducted on 14th January, 2011. This workshop proved to be productive experience as it enhanced the analysing skills of the participants. Various components of the workshop presented in the form of activities like role play, fun games etc created an enthralling environment for all involved. A self-evaluation test was conducted which gave all the participants a chance to assess their interpersonal skills. Over all, it was an enriching experience as the teachers learnt to implement good communication skills in order to make learning fun in the class.

The Kiddies Fun Circus
As an entry point to the Unit ‘Movement and Entertainment’ the children of CIPP-1 had a fun-filled ‘Circus Day’ on 13th January, 2011. The children were dressed up in colourful costumes and make up. They enacted the roles of clowns, acrobats, jugglers, ballerinas, animal trainers, ferocious lions and elephants and the ‘conjuring’ magician. The ring-master welcomed the spectators and introduced each performer as they confidently stepped into the ‘ring’ and entertained the crowd with their antics and skills. The audience was held spell-bound and warmly applauded each act.

Exploring the Past
On 18th January, 2011 the children of Grade 2 CIPP went for a visit to the Prince of Wales Museum as an extension to their Social Science unit ‘Finding out about the Past’. The children were transported into a world which existed long ago as they viewed the ancient artefacts from the Indus Valley Civilisation (Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro). They were fascinated by the jewel encrusted sword and armour belonging to the Great Warrior Shivaji. It was a wonderful experience for the young ones who felt like they were in a Time Machine transported back into the past.

Interpersonal Communication Skills - CIPP
On 14th January, 2011 a workshop on Interpersonal communication skill was conducted for all the CIPP teachers. The importance of developing good interpersonal communication skills in today’s team-oriented workplace was discussed. A PowerPoint presentation was shown depicting the various means of communication and ways of building more effective communication skills. As a concluding activity teachers were given a self-assessment exercise that was designed to help them evaluate their own interpersonal communication skills and style. It was an interactive and an enlightening session.

EMUN-2010
A 20 student delegation from VIBGYOR High participated in the EMUN conference held at Ecole Mondiale World School from 18th to 20th December, 2010. They were divided into 3 committees: Human Rights Commission, Economic and Social Council, and Disarmament and Security Council representing 7 different countries. The VIBGYOR delegation learnt about skilful tact, effective diplomacy, breakthrough ideas and perceptive discussions on some of the most important and unresolved issues that challenge our world community. They became aware of the world problems and successfully passed a resolution to resolve them.

Parent Orientation
CIPP will now have two sections each, from Grades 1 to 4. CIPP believes that, to excel in academics - the teachers, the parents and the students are equal stakeholders. Keeping this in mind, an orientation programme was held on 7th December for parents of students from Sr. Kg to Grade 4 (ICSE). Their scepticism about IGCSE was eased after they watched the presentation and browsed through the classroom planners, study material, worksheets and textbooks. Their queries were appropriately addressed in the interactive sessions.

Upgrading Counselling Standards
A Resource Meet was organized on 2nd-3rd December, 2010 for professionals of Resource Departments from Bengaluru, Baroda, Pune, Kolhapur and Mumbai. They came together to share their expertise and skills. The meet helped them to understand how they can enrich the scholastic needs and emotional makeup of children, using different therapies and strategies with respect to existing support systems. Dr Devendra Save and Dr Jay Shastri from The Bombay Psychiatric Society spoke on Suicide Prevention amongst children. VIBGYOR High moved a step closer towards its vision of providing an excellent nurturing environment for its students.

A Visit to the Petrol Pump
Learning by first-hand experience is the hallmark of education. To make the children aware of the causes and effects of vehicular pollution, students of GRADE 1, ICSE were taken to a petrol pump on 29th November. They had the opportunity of observing the different parts of a vehicle from up close. They learnt how the right kind of fuel and the maintenance of the vehicles can curb pollution. They also learnt to check the air pressure in the tyres at the tyre pressure checking station. They came back enriched.

Inter-House Art Competition
With a firm belief that each child possesses an inherent talent that needs to be nurtured and honed, an Inter-House Art Competition was held for the students of Grade 1 on 30th November. They created their own imaginary superheroes and monsters and described them in two sentences. The creators of the best three art works were declared the winners. Their ideas and thoughts were presented in a unique way and it was truly a beautiful journey into the realm of dream and fantasy, unleashing the imaginative world of our children.

Hindi Culminating Activity
A Culminating Activity was held for the students of Grade 7 ICSE on 30th November on their Hindi unit ‘Onam’. They presented a lively enactment of the story of ‘Mahabali’. The parents were delighted to hear their children speaking fluently in Hindi. Through a PPT, the students displaysed their understanding of the cuisines of Kerala and the world famous Snake Boat Race. The enthusiastic parents then proceeded to participate in making a ‘Pookallam’ ( a floral rangoli) and thoroughly enjoyed the activity. The traditional music of Kerala playing in the background, enhanced the ambience. A really pleasant experience for all!]

Speaking Their Minds
As an extension to their English Language topic, ‘Discursive and Argumentative Writing’, students of AS Level participated in a formal debate in class on 26th November. The class was divided into two teams – the Proposition and the Opposition to voice their opinions on the topic To die or not to die – Should Euthanasia be Permitted? The speakers spoke convincingly and had the statistics and examples to prove their points. They impressed the judges by debating with poise and confidence.

Encounter With Wild Life
The students of Grade 2 were taken on a nature trail to Sanjay Gandhi National Park on 20th October. It was quite a fascinating trip as the children got the opportunity to be in picturesque surroundings and thereby learn the importance of protecting our wilderness. They were made aware of the threats that endanger the survival of our national animal, the Tiger and other wild animals. The major attraction of the trip was the lion and tiger safari. Creativity At Its Best
As rightly stated ‘a great story isn’t necessarily about great thoughts, but about having an imaginative spark’. This was manifested in the form of an Inter–House story writing competition which was held for Grade 2 on 15th October. This competition not only gave the students the opportunity to showcase and develop their creative streak but also a chance to display some of their beautifully sketched thoughts. Students were assessed on the basis of originality, grammar and presentation. Overall, it was a wonderful and enriching experience.

Math Fest
The Math Fest , held on October 20 at Gundecha Education Academy was attended by 5 teachers and 10 students. The various events held were MATHS- AT- WORK , WHO WANTS TO BE A ‘MATH’IONNAIRE ?, DRAMATHICS and TEACHER’S TOOL BOX . Our students were a part of the first round of the Quiz . The overall experience was invigorating as a wide variety of unique and creative teaching aids were on display.

Discipline Management
VIBGYOR is proud of its constant endeavour to enhance teacher effectiveness by conducting regular In-house training workshops for the teachers. A well-designed module, prepared by VITT (VIBGYOR Institute of Teacher Training) is sent every month by the CO to the centres, where these workshops are conducted by the Section Heads
A workshop on “Discipline Management” was conducted on 16th October. The teachers reflected on the fact that discipline cannot be forced; it should be instilled, so as to make the child distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. The highlights of the workshop were definition and components of discipline, strategies for effective discipline management, introspection on their class control and effective discipline techniques. Activities and role play made the session an interactive one.

Moulding Booker Prize Winners
‘The pen is mightier than the sword’ is not just an adage but something we believe in at Vibgyor. The children of Grade 1(CIPP) displayed their creativity by writing a short story with illustrations. Grade 2 (CIPP) had to weave an interesting story around the characters given, Grade 3(CIPP) twisted the ending to a given story and Grade 4(CIPP) spun a yarn where only the beginning of a story was given. It was wonderful to see the children oozing with confidence and enthusiasm during the creative writing competition.

Orientation
An orientation was conducted for the students of Grade 6 IGCSE and their parents. They were introduced to the CIE Checkpoint subjects and the syllabus along with an overview of the IGCSE and A Level grades. The issues discussed included the assessment pattern followed by the school, the PTM, the homework guidelines and the discipline policy. It was a very informative and an enriching session.

Trip To Parle Factory
The students of Grade 9-IGCSE went on a Field Trip to the ‘Parle Factory’ on 21 Oct. to watch the actual production process at the factory and to analyze if the location is suitable for the business. They learnt about the technology used in the production process, the structure of the organization and the role played by the company in issues related to the environment. This was integrated with English in which students were asked to write a Journal entry on the visit to the factory.
