All students are unique learners and each one uses his learning, differently. Students face diverse challenges which impact their holistic development. They thus need opportunities, guidance and support during their formative, academic years.
Inclusion advocates educating students with special needs in normal, mixed-ability classes, with students of the same chronological age. It is a process of enabling all the students, including those with special educational needs, to learn and participate effectively within mainstream school systems. But just placing such students within a mainstream setting does not by itself achieve inclusion. Inclusion is an effort to ensure that these students go to school along with their friends, while also receiving ‘specially designed instruction and support’ which they need, to succeed as learners.
Inclusion, at VIBGYOR High, means being included in life; being a part of what everyone else is; being welcomed and embraced as a member who belongs. The following policies, thus, become the cornerstone of our Inclusive philosophy:
- Inclusion as a continuing process, not a one-time event.
- Strengthening and sustaining the participation of students, teachers, school administrators, parents and community members in the work of the school.
- Focus on identifying and then reducing the barriers to learning and participation, rather than on what is “special” about the individual student or group of students, and targeting services to address the “problem”.
- Providing an accessible curriculum and appropriate training programmes for teachers and students.
- Offering constant support and direction to the students and teaching faculty.
Under the Inclusive Education policy, VIBGYOR High conducts several workshops and seminars for students, teachers and parents.
At the core of the Inclusive Programme is the Resource Team, a multidisciplinary team of dedicated professionals who provide an end to end programme for each student with special needs. These professionals deal with common behavioural and cognitive problems, with competent expertise. They observe the students to understand their level of disability. Different diagnostic tools and behavioural modification techniques are then used by them to develop the personal, educational and social skills of these students.
The Resource room also has a Counselling Centre which provides vocational and professional guidance to all the students. The team also implements counselling programmes that promote the students’ academic achievements. This versatile team offers services such as:
- Educational assistance to students with special needs
- Psycho-educational Assessments
- Therapeutic-Counselling Services and Remediation Programme
- Therapeutic-Counselling Services and Remediation Programme
- Vocational-Guidance Programme
- Workshops, awareness and training programmes for the school community
Hence, Inclusive Education involves The WHOLE SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT and perhaps the whole education system development - where each one can enrich the other.
We believe in making all the students, regardless of their strengths or weaknesses in any area, a part of the school commune. In this way we contribute to their personal, academic and moral growth, thereby enhancing the overall quality of their lives.
The fundamental principle of our approach towards inclusion is valuing and respecting diversity within the human community. We at VIBGYOR High, thus ensure that all the students receive individual attention, learning accommodations and supports which would result in meaningful education, making them participative and, in the final analysis, contributing members of society.
