ACTIVITIES from 5th to 9th July 2010
Energy Conservation (Grade 5 to 7 - 7th July)
Miss Veena Bakshi from Tata Power (Energy Club) conducted an energy conservation program for the students of Grades 5, 6 and 7 on 7th July. A video clip, demonstrating the inevitable facts of over consumption of energy was presented. Simple tips on how to save energy were discussed. The most remarkable aspect of the presentation was making children aware of how to read and understand an electricity bill. It was an informative and thought provoking program.

Dream Dressing (Grade 1)
Every child has a dream of what he wants to be when he grows up. As part of their Social Science unit ‘Ourselves’, the students of Grade 1 (CIPP) dressed up as doctors, teachers, engineers and sportsmen, displaying their future aspirations. The first grade was abuzz with excitement and animation as they shared information about their professions, thus exploring the realm of variant careers. It was very amusing to see their zeal and enthusiasm.

Future Chef (Grade 5)
As an extension to the Social Science unit “Using Micro-organisms” the students of Grade 5 (CIPP) were thrilled when they used yeast as a micro-organism to make bread. The students were delighted to taste the bread they had baked themselves in different shapes. After the activity some students were so excited that they promised to try it out at home. It was indeed an unforgettable experience for these young ones!

ACTIVITIES from 9th to 16th July 2010
Stargazing Expedition (Grade 3 ICSE and Grade 5 CIPP - 9th July)
A field trip to Nehru Planetarium was organised on 9th July for the students of Grade 3 (ICSE) and Grade 5 (CIPP) as an extension of their Social Science unit ‘Universe and Earth’. The objective of this field trip was to provide knowledge about the Sun and the Solar System. To begin with, an audio-visual presentation on our solar system and India’s endeavours in Astronomy were showcased. The students then entered the Sky Theatre. The show was a visual treat with information on planets, constellations, galaxies and other heavenly bodies.

Plant Science (Grade4 - 9th July)
As an extension to the Social Science units ‘Soils and Agriculture’ and ‘Plant Adaptation’ grade 4 students were taken for their first field trip to the K.G.M.P Ayurvedic Medicinal Garden, at Kalina on 9th July. They learnt about the different types of soil, parts of a plant, structure of a leaf, terrestrial and aquatic plants and different adaptations. They were enlightened on the medicinal qualities of some plants. Our young Vibgyorites enthusiastically contributed towards keeping our earth green, by planting a sapling in the garden.

ACTIVITIES from 24th June to 2nd July 2010
3 R’s – Reduce, Recycle, Reuse (Grade 5 to 9 - 30th June)
The theme ‘3 R’s – Reduce, Recycle, Reuse’ formed the basis for the Intra School Competitions on Craft Skills held on 30th June, for Grades 5 to 9. There were many activities like making Treasure Boxes, Paper Bags, Garbage Bins, Designer Portfolios and Card Castles. The materials used were eco-friendly and biodegradable. The main objective of the competition was to develop the 3 H’s of the students - Head, Heart and Hand. The students participated with zeal and were in high spirits throughout the day. The competition was judged by the Art HOD, Ms Shweta and her team.

Blending Cultures (Grade 5 - 29th June)
The CIPP staff was privileged to meet MS. Erica and Ms. Ardelle, the two CIE representatives from Lake Forest Academy, Illinois, USA on 29th June. The representatives were fascinated by the Interactive session conducted during the Science class of CIPP Grade 5. The infectious enthusiasm of the students overwhelmed them! They were excited to indulge in the scrumptious Indian cuisine at the school canteen. The discussion ranged from learning and teaching strategies, to innovative measures in dealing with special children in a class. This enabled the teachers to introspect and widen their horizon with respect to teaching.

Designer Pen and Stationery Holders (Grade 2 - 29th June)
Grade 2 children made designer pen and stationery holders on 29th June. It was an exhibition of talent and creativity in the truest sense of the term. The young artists created innovative and useful articles out of the domestic waste materials. More than the urge to win the prize, it was a platform which allowed the children to be at their imaginative best and made them come up with outstanding products. It was indeed an enriching experience for everyone involved.

Creativity Unleashed (Grade 1 - 28th June)
At VIBGYOR High, we seek to develop the creative potential of the children shaping them into critical thinkers. To motivate them towards this, an Inter-house Competition of making Paper Weights was held on 28th June for Grade 1. The imagination and ingenuity of the children was revealed in the artistic way they made and decorated their paper weights. The three best paper weights were awarded the first, second and third position.

Expanding Horizons (Grade 2 - 28th June)
As an extension of the Social Science unit Sense Organs, Grade 2 children were taken to the Industrial Home for the Blind on 28th June. The children got an opportunity to see the visually impaired people busy in various activities like stitching, weaving and playing musical instruments. They were amazed by the creative skills and incredible talent of these people. They also got hands on exposure of how the visually impaired use Braille to read and write. It was an enriching and inspiring experience on the whole.

The Frank Anthony Memorial All India Inter School Debate Competition 2010 (25th June)
VIBGYOR High, Mumbai was one of the venues for the Frank Anthony Memorial All India Inter School Debate Competition Category-II held on 25th June. It played host to ten schools. The judges on this occasion were:
Mr Gerald Roche, a well known name in media advertising
Mr Kaiwan Mehta, an architect, writer of Alice in Bhuleshwar and the organizer of Pecha Kucha - Mumbai chapter
Ms Lubaina Bandukwala, the Editor of DNA YA
All the participants debated with conviction and kept the audience mesmerised throughout. The winners of the competition were:

Best Speaker- Runner Up: Sapna Sanghvi, Eklavya School (Ahmedabad)
Best Team- Winner: Activity High School (Mumbai)

Visit to a Post Office (Grade 1 - 24th June)
At VIBGYOR High we believe in experiential learning and field trips are a great way to reinforce the lessons taught in the classroom. A visit to the post office was organized for Grade 1 on 24th June. The children observed the functioning of various departments. This made them understand the work of a postman and the basic postal operations. They also posted the thank you cards written by them to their parents.

Personality Day (Grade 4 - 23rd June)
The Grade 4 students enthusiastically celebrated Personality Day on 23rd June. Students were required to come dressed as achievers and make a presentation. Our young Vibgyorites came dressed as Mother Teresa, Kalpana Chawla, Mahatma Gandhi and Lata Mangeshkar, thus presenting achievers from various fields like Science, Entertainment, Music and Politics. The activity enhanced the students’ speaking and listening skills. The set objectives of the activity were thus successfully met.

Child Abuse – Counselling Session Grade 3
As an extension to the Grade 3 Literature unit “James and the Giant Peach”, a half-hour counselling session on “Child Abuse” was conducted by the Resource Team where the types and effects of child abuse were discussed. The Counsellors introduced the topic with a role play by the Resource Team and followed it up with a power point presentation. Students were also enlightened about the different ways of dealing with child abuse. The session ended with an open discussion on how such incidents can be prevented and dealt with tactfully.

ACTIVITIES from June 1st to 5th June' 2010
Back to School
(Grade 1 & 2 - 5th June)
A very congenial atmosphere was created by the teachers to welcome the children to the new academic year.
Children of Grade 1 were cheerfully welcomed to the class by the Tom & Jerry puppets followed by the individual introduction of each child.
The introduction in Grade 2 took the form of a game called “Circle Time” which proved to be an ice-breaker as each child spoke a little about himself/herself thereby sharing their likes with their new and old classmates.
The children’s excitement and happiness on the first day of school set the right tone for the rest of the year.

Salient features of the Coffee Meet (5th June)
The Coffee Meet was conducted by the Coordinator, Ms Melita Coutinho who explained the CIE curriculum to the parents of students who were new admissions. She touched upon the salient features of the school and our vision and mission. The session covered all these crucial aspects: an overview of the Checkpoint, IGCSE and A Level Curriculum; the subjects and streams offered by the CIE; the assessment pattern adopted by the individual sections; the facilities, Field Trips and the Discipline Policy followed by the school. Parents were informed about how they can interact and communicate with the school so as to play a proactive role in their children’s education. The session ended fruitfully with an open discussion between the parents and the Coordinator.

An Interactive Session (Coffee Meet - 5th June)
On Saturday, 5th June’10 a Coffee Meet was conducted for the parents of new admissions to CIPP grades 1-6. The Vice-Principal, Mrs. Pratibha Prabhu welcomed the parents and enlightened them on the vision and mission of our school. The concepts and curriculum of CIPP were expounded to the parents through a PowerPoint presentation made by the CIPP Coordinator, Ms Trupti Udeshi. This was followed by a fruitful interaction between the parents and the respective teachers

An insight into the school(Primary Section - 5th June)
A formal orientation was organized for parents of the Primary section on 5th of June’10.
It was conducted by the Coordinators, Ms Pooja Kasera and Ms Asha Sharma who began the session with a very enlightening power point presentation which highlighted the policies and methodology adopted by the school.
The parents were informed about the curriculum, SPA, Field trips, lunch and snack facility.

Salient features of the Coffee Meet (NIOS - 3rd June)
The Coffee Meet for parents of NIOS students was held on the 3rd June 2010. It was conducted by Mrs. Pratibha Prabhu, Vice Principal.
It was an interactive session where parents were briefed about the school policies and the rules and regulations of the school.
The academics aspect which involved the choice of subjects, the assessment pattern and the class work, home work and project work was explained in detail.
The meet ended by wishing the students the very best for the academic year 2010-11.

Let us make a start (Primary Section - 2nd & 3rd June)
The Teacher Induction programme was conducted on 2nd and 3rd June 2010 for the teachers of the Primary section. It was introduced by the Principal, Mr. Shim Mathew. A revitalizing tone was set and an exuberant atmosphere was created among the teachers in anticipation of the academic year ahead. The workshop included role play which made the session interesting and interactive whereby the new teachers shed their inhibitions and participated enthusiastically. It was indeed a time for reviewing known information and being informed about the new policies set by the management for the welfare of the staff. |

Teachers’ Induction
(Secondary Section - 1st & 2nd June)
The Teachers’ Induction was conducted on the 1st and 2nd of June 2010 for all the teachers of the Secondary section.
During the two day programme, the teachers were inducted about the school, the roles and responsibilities of the Central Office, the teachers, the maintenance of records & all the important events and days. Teachers were exhorted to read the Teachers’ Manual at the earliest. The assessment system and the marking scheme were also explained in detail.
It was an interactive session where teachers participated in training games and activities like lesson planning.
